A Message of Appreciation
March 2026 update from CSAA Secretary Nick Hume:
"As you are all aware Civil Service Sports Council (CSSC) has undergone a strategic Transformation based on a series of reviews conducted throughout 2025.
This has had a serious impact on the way Sports and Recreational Bodies (SRBs) are viewed because in a legal context they are Unincorporated Associations, with the onus of responsibility sitting with the Committee Members and CSSC is not happy about this.
CSSC has, therefore, been very keen to encourage SRBs to dissolve and has taken all funding out of their hands for 2026 and brought it in-house by creating a small team to lead on sporting activities.
As a consequence, the number of events that CSAA can organise has been reduced and CSSC are keen to take the lead, despite not having the qualifications or experience to undertake this across all sports that remain within their scope.
With the abandonment of the CSSC T&S Policy from 1/4/26 and Departments no longer authorising T&S for their own teams, Departmental Sport no longer exists in its true sense after 162 years since the first T&F Sports Day in 1864.
At the moment CSAA has decided to continue as an SRB and is seeking to stage a London 10k, a London Trail/XC Race and encourage participation in the London Bridges Relay. However, all this is reliant on CSSC providing the funds. They are keen to hold a London 10k/5k but CSAA have raised a number of concerns that are being looked at before any final decision is made.
The Cross Country Rep Match vs the RAF is safe for the time being but the Race Walk vs the Police is in jeopardy.
It is likely that CSSC would support other events in major cities but this requires volunteers to organise them and CSAA does not have the volunteers to do this, apart from the North West.
The Transformation has not been received well by the Sports Bodies and many are very unhappy with the fact that sport is seen as an easy cost saving win by CSSC, who believe that members require access to sport within 30 minutes of home!
Money is at the heart of Transformation and CSSC unfortunately is struggling to survive in the modern world.
For more information on Transformation visit the CSSC website."

The CSAA has sadly learnt that Life Vice President Roger Smith recently passed away. The following is by way of a short tribute:
"Roger was a member of the CSAA Committee from 1981 and served in numerous roles during that time. He had a great deal of knowledge regarding CSAA athletic activities. He was always encouraging, helpful and ever cheerful and will be missed by his many friends within the CSAA family. A moment of silence will be held before the CSAA Cross Country Championships followed a period of clapping."
